James Maddock’s status as a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene is confirmed with every listen of any song in his prodigious catalog. Relix Magazine put it this way: “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn't need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery."

After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood, whose debut Songs From Stamford Hill was featured prominently on TV shows such as “Dawson’s Creek,” Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album, while the follow-up Wake Up And Dream ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. With the release of Another Life (2013) and The Green (2015) Maddock continued to demonstrate why many consider him to be one of the best singer/songwriters working today. He has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). According to radio legend Vin Scelsa, Maddock's "heartbreakingly beautiful and exquisitely crafted" music "touches the soul." As a songwriter, James recently had three songs co-written with Mike Scott on the new Waterboys album Modern Blues (which appeared in the Top 50 on the UK Albums Chart), a co-write with Gary Barlow (“Actress”) on Barlow’s new album (2X Platinum), as well as a cut (“Fragile”) on the Dirt On My Tongue album by emerging UK artist Jo Harman. Songs from Another Life have been featured on NBC’s Parenthood and ABC Family’s Switched at Birth. Maddock is a constant live presence in the U.S. and Europe.

Maddock’s latest, Night Work, re-visits the approach from Maddock’s Songs from Stamford Hill Wood days. Storytelling for Everyman, and Everywoman. Maddock at his best. In addition to his long-time NYC based band some of the tracks feature former members of Wood. Night Work is out July 21st.

Life in a Blender was born in Jersey City in the late 80s, tossed from a speeding train, and then somehow managed to record ten albums ranging from screaming punk to orchestrated chamber pop. They have brought the high theatrics of their live act to stages from Berlin to Austin to Toronto to Brooklyn and Seattle with a stop in Poughkeepsie. Their live cover of "Purple Rain" at The Ritz, featuring James Mastro, had the band banned for life. Their latest album, "Bent by the Weather," is gaining raving mad reviews: "Bent by the Weather takes LIAB's well-honed, intellectually-minded sophisto-pop to new heights."—The Big Takeover. "Bent by the Weather delivers tuneful, oddball indie rock from the mind of true American original." —The Jersey Journal. "Smart, avant-garde, and catchy, "Bent by the Weather" is anchored by drummer Ken Meyer from Hoboken." —Jim Nolan. Buy everything at www.lifeinablender.net.

Tom Barrett and CR Gennone at 503 Social Club

Tom Barrett and CG Gennone will play 503 Social Club Thursday, October 24, 2024. Doors at 7. BYOB.
$10 adv/$15 day-of
Tickets available at both Guitar Bar stores or online here: https://www.eventbrite.com/.../tom-barrett-and-cr-gennone...

Tom Barrett lives a quiet life in East Nashville, Tennessee these days with his wife and two cats, but in a former life he was a prevalent figure in both the Jersey City and Hoboken music scenes for nearly two and a half decades, having played in more than a half-dozen bands (Overlake, American Watercolor Movement, etc.) before embarking on his own musical path in 2011. Three full-length records and a handful of EPs and singles later, he’s still developing his own style of carefully rendered acoustic indie-folk tunes, taking inspiration from greats like Nick Drake and Jeff Tweedy, along with so many others.

His fourth record, Everywhere We Live, is brighter and more polished than any of his previous full-length releases. Its eleven songs mostly reckon with the feelings of fear and loneliness that come with living in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. There’s also hope and resilience in there as well. And a lot of Mellotron. Everywhere We Live will be available on all streaming services October 4th via Mint 400 Records.

For Jersey City guitarist and songwriter CR Gennone, it’s been a long road to The Ghosts Are Coming Home, the second album from his five-piece outfit CR and the Nones. Ghosts, the Nones’ second record and first on Magic Door, is a culmination of the sound and aesthetic Gennone has been building across many years and multiple bands. Its combination of expansiveness and introspection recalls The War on Drugs or early My Morning Jacket, and the ten tracks here showcase sincerity and heart that are impossible to resist. - Zach Romano

Syd played the math teacher Miss Fingerwood, on Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and glamorous hippie chick Laurel on the original Tales of the City—like everyone else, she is working on at least 3 books, and writing her first musical by flashlight in her tent, and she is probably sorry she walked off with your lighter in her pocket.

Unfortunately, band member Edward Rogers will not be able to make this show, but after their recent record-release show in New York City, Amanda Thorpe returns from London for Bedsit Poets to do one special show in New Jersey at the 503 Social Club. Joining Amanda will be Don Piper and Bob Perry.

Psych-O-Positive is a self described "psychedelic cave punk band" based out of Hoboken, NJ. USA.

“If you took all the great punk bands of the 80’s (like Gut Bank and Sexpod) and threw them in a blender with the best Riot Grrrl and Antifolk bands of the 90’s (like The Aquanettas, The Sprinkle Genies, and tranceSenders) and you let that blender spin for the aughts to late teens and then at the dawn of 2020, you took the blender and threw it full force into a brick wall, the sound of the glass shattering and the slow spill down the wall would sound just like Psych-O-Positive.”

Speed the Plough, Brenda+1 at 503 Social Club

4:00 PM16:00

Speed the Plough, Brenda+1 at 503 Social Club

Speed the Plough is a New Jersey-based chamber pop/indie rock band that has been playing since 1984. The band rose out of the ashes of The Trypes, a mainstay of the early 80's Hoboken scene, which included most members of The Feelies, many of whom continued with STP through that band's first decade. Speed the Plough has released 9 full-length albums (on Coyote/Twin-Tone, East Side Digital, and Bar-None Records), a limited edition single on the French label Acetone, and a self-released EP. They have had songs featured in two independent films, Strangest Dreams (1990)and Paradise Park (1993). Their 2013 release, "The Plough & The Stars" (Bar-None) is a 30 year retrospective of the band.
The current lineup features founding members John Baumgartner (keyboards and vocals), Toni Baumgartner (woodwinds and vocals) and Marc Francia (guitar), Michael Baumgartner (guitar
and vocals), Glenn Mercer (percussion, guitar), Dan Francia (bass) and John Demeski (drums).

As the NY Times described them: “...this is no rarefied art music. It’s a garage-band sort of minimalism, with welters of electric guitar sounds and feedback accelerating madly into crashing crescendos, only to subside and begin building again.”

BRENDA+1 are Brenda Sauter and Rich Barnes of WILD CARNATION. Brenda joined The Trypes and The Feelies in the mid 1980's before becoming one of the founding members of Wild Carnation in 1992. She was a member of Speed The Plough from 1991 until 1996. Rich played in X-Wires in the early 1980's and Wow And Flutter in the early 1990’s before becoming one of the founding members of Wild Carnation. He was a member of Speed The Plough from 1993 until 1996. Rich and Brenda, as a duo, have been posting their songs and tributes to songwriters since April, 2020. This is the first time they’re taking their Facebook musings on the road.

FREEDY JOHNSTON @ 503 Social Club

503 Social Club is proud to announce a solo show from the legendary Freedy Johnston! Freedy Johnston has taken an unpredictable path throughout his 30-year career. It’s a true underdog story. He has a wicked gift for turning a melodic phrase with equal parts’ heart on his sleeve’ troubadour and weaver of mysteries. In 1994 Rolling Stone named Johnston the ‘Songwriter of the Year’, describing him as “A master storyteller, (who) sketches out full-blown tragedies in a few taut poetic lines.” Adding, “He joins that elite cadre of songwriters—Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Elvis Costello—whose brilliant pop compositions turn magical with the addition of a defiantly idiosyncratic singing voice.” Not bad for a self-proclaimed “geek in glasses who never left his room.”

Doors at 7. Only 40-person capacity, so advance tickets are suggested. Available at Guitar Bar (160 First St, Hoboken, 201-222-0915), and Guitar Bar Jersey City (362 Palisade Ave.) $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Venmo: @Guitar-Bar

Bobby Bare Jr @ 503 Social Club

Bobby Bare, Jr. could've phoned in a career. He could've exploited the fact that he's the son of iconic Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Bare, was born into Nashville's Music Row elite, and counted artists like Shel Silverstein as close family friends and George Jones and Tammy Wynette as next door neighbors. Instead, Bobby blazed a path of unique songwriting craftsmanship with a voice that blows through you like an unyielding wind on the desolate prairie. As a solo artist, as a member of Guided By Voices or Silver Jews, has always made exciting, worthwhile music, and this is a rare chance to see him in an intimate setting.

Doors: 7:00, Show 7:30. Only 40-person capacity, so advance tickets are suggested. Available at Guitar Bar (160 First St, Hoboken, 201-222-0915), and Guitar Bar Jersey City (362 Palisade Ave.) $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Venmo: @Guitar-Bar (please specify which event you are paying for)

MaryKate O'Neil - Art Exhibit Opening Reception @ 503 Social Club

503 Social Club (503 Third St, Hoboken, NJ)

Multi-media artist Marykate O'Neil has released six albums, a few cassettes, and a couple of .45’s. Her music has been played on the radio, internets and featured in movies and television. Marykate has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe to big festival crowds and to empty seats in darkened basements.
Her paintings are colorful, unique in texture and have an intuitive sense that is often simultaneously representational and expressionistic. Every gesture is made into an artistic experience embracing the pop culture of the everyday. Marykate’s painting practice is closely related to her music: “The more I paint, I feel like my paintings look like my songs sound. In both arenas, I am drawn to small everyday moments that stick to you – the ones where contradictions sit comfortably side by side each other.”

Running from January 28th to February 29th. There will be an opening reception January 28th from 3-5 pm with the artist present.

A performance by Jill Sobule follows at 5pm

Walter Parks Live

Veteran blues and jazz guitarist Walter Parks has built an international career as the lead guitarist for Woodstock legend Richie Havens, as half of the folk-duo The Nudes, and as leader of the neo-southern rock group Swamp Cabbage. Just as Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp has served as the headwaters of Florida’s Suwanee River, so has it served as the inspirational headwaters for Walter’s unique guitar concept – a banjo-esque fingerpicking style that toggles between expressing the swamp’s foggy, ambient underbelly and it’s eminent danger via the use of a modicum of pleasant distortion. Inspired by the sultry black gospel that wails from storefront churches and roadhouses in the American southeast, Parks’s raspy vocal lows and soaring operatic falsetto explore the frontier of the modern human spirit in search of a place where it can flourish.

Join us at Guitar Bar Jr. for a night of Parks's wonderful music.
